Less than an hour from Valencia, above La Vall d’Uixó, rises Alto de Pipa, one of the peaks at the southern end of the Sierra de Espadán. A circular mountain hike with Mediterranean views, pine and cork oak forest — perfect for an active Sunday out of the city.

The hike

We climb along trails through pines and cork oaks to the summit, with a lunch stop and panoramic views over the mountains, the plain and the coast.

Optional: the San José caves, Europe’s longest navigable underground river

At the foot of the mountain are the San José caves (Coves de Sant Josep), explored by boat along an underground river of stalactites and illuminated vaults. An optional visit to round off the day (entrance not included).
