Mascarat canyon: the chasm between Altea and Calpe

The Mascarat canyon is a sheer-walled crack separating Altea and Calpe, crossed high above by three bridges (the old road, the N-332 and the TRAM railway). Walking it is one of the most impressive hikes on the Costa Blanca.

We head into the gorge, where the walls almost touch, pass beneath the bridges and then climb up to viewpoints over the coast.

Views over the Mediterranean and the Morro de Toix

The upper part of the route offers panoramic views of the Peñón de Ifach, the bay of Altea and the Mascarat point and Morro de Toix dropping into the sea.

Where is the Mascarat canyon?

Between Altea and Calpe (Alicante), on the Costa Blanca. It’s a narrow, sheer-walled gorge crossed by three historic bridges, about two hours by coach from Valencia.

How hard is the hike?

Medium-hard: a circular route of about 10 km and 436 m of elevation gain, with rocky and steep sections. You need a good level of fitness.

Is the hike guided?

Yes, the route is led by professional mountain guides, as well as your ValenciaTribe coordinator.

Is this the same as the Mascarat bridge swing?

No. This is a hike through and around the canyon. If you’re after adrenaline, we also run the Mascarat bridge swing.

Where does the coach leave from?

From Mestalla stadium (Avenida de Aragón, Valencia). The exact time is in your booking confirmation.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. Most people come solo, and it’s the easiest way to meet new people in Valencia.

What happens if the weather is bad?
