Day trip from Valencia by coach for history lovers. Peñíscola: a medieval town on the sea with Papa Luna’s castle, a Game of Thrones location. Sagunto: a 1st-century Roman theatre and a castle with 2,000 years of history. Departure from Mestalla with a ValenciaTribe coordinator.
Some trips take you somewhere pretty. Others change how you see history. Peñíscola and Sagunto together are the second kind: in a single day you cover more than 2,000 years — from the Romans to the medieval popes — with the Mediterranean as the common thread.
With ValenciaTribe everything is organised: private coach, a coordinator with you and free time to explore at your own pace.
Peñíscola is one of the most impressive towns in Spain. Its entirely medieval old town sits on a rock jutting into the sea, forming a small peninsula — hence its name. The result is a walled town that seems to float on the Mediterranean.
Papa Luna’s castle dominates from the top. Built by the Knights Templar in the 14th century and home for years to Pope Benedict XIII — the famous «Papa Luna» — it keeps its original rooms and offers 360-degree views over the sea and coast.

The cobbled streets of the old town, the local shops (try the coca de Peñíscola), the seafront terrace restaurants and the fine sandy beaches around the rock make Peñíscola a complete, one-of-a-kind destination.

Peñíscola was also a filming location for Game of Thrones (it stood in for the city of Meereen in several scenes), making it a pilgrimage site for fans from all over the world.

Sagunto, just 25 km from Valencia, is home to one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Spain: the Roman Theatre of Sagunto, built in the 1st century AD with room for over 4,000 spectators. From its stands, the views over the town, the Valencian farmland and the sea on the horizon are extraordinary.

On the same hill stretches the mighty Sagunto castle, a fortress layered with history: Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Christians all left their mark on its walls over more than 2,000 years. The walled site, over 900 metres long, is one of the largest in the Valencia region.

Sagunto’s old town, with its medieval Jewish quarter, Plaza del Cronista Chabret and remains of the Roman city, rounds off a visit that’s much more than a simple sightseeing stroll.
Times are approximate and may vary with traffic.
It’s not compulsory — you can enjoy the old town and the views without going in. But the castle interior is worth it, especially the papal hall and the views from the walls.
Yes, there are two beaches at the foot of the rock. The North Beach is bigger and quieter. Bring a swimsuit if you want a dip.
About 4 hours in Peñíscola and 2 hours in Sagunto.
Yes — kids especially love Peñíscola castle and the sea views. There are some slopes, so wear comfortable shoes.
